Maybe you should, I dunno, ignore convention in favour of legibility? Crazy!

Also while I'm here, it drives me up the wall the you render all numbers as words, no matter how long they are

Captioning ruins souls

i completely flipped out the other day when the SMH rendered 1974 as Nineteen-seventy-four
-
Was it the first word in the sentence? Otherwise, no excuse
-
Yes, but I maintain it's always 100% inexcusable
-
Or one hundred per cent? Or a hundred percent?
-

I'm fine with all of it, except for the comma after the period and before the "s". I read the explanation, still, no.

Yes, but *why* is setting off "Jr." with commas one of ur conventions? Few others do it, and it looks cluttered. Why this choice?

A period represents the lost portion of a truncated word. If you have the first and last letter present, you don't need it. End of story.

If 99% of people can read it and not be fussed it doesn't matter one iota. Anal retentive, elitist academia snobs can go screw...

I feel like the second comma should actually come after the 's? Cause it's part of the word? So, Jr.'s,

I am in favour of the Oxford comma, correct spelling and good manners in general. One reason to subscribe to The New Yorker

It's not a collision of conventions. Just like about everything else NYer is ignorant and won't admit when they are wrong.
