James Comey’s memos are far more likely to bury President Trump than to exonerate him, David Remnick writes.http://nyer.cm/80pmHOw

So why would Trump risk his presidency asking Comey to drop the Flynn investigation when Flynn had already been long cleared by the FBI?

1/2 Received wisdom = nothing less than 'high crime & misdemeanors' (HCM) suffices for impeachment. Wrong. Impeach (House) + Convict of HCM

2/3 of HCM (Senate) triggers manadatory sentence - removal from office. That provision says nothing about less serious offenses or penalties

3/3 and does not create the impeachment power. That provision is elsewhere and it does not limit the application of impeachment to HCM.
