IMO, press should call them out when they're wrong on issues like these. not suggest they fake it better.

Not obvious to me that Google is "wrong" to not take ads from an industry it believes is ripping off its customers.

But surely you'd agree that it's wrong for FB to filter out rightward-leaning 'trending topics'?

Depends on what you mean by "wrong." To the extent that it's breaking some implicit promise to customers, that's not good.

Moreover I would argue it's long-term impossible (not to mention evil) to act one way and talk another.

Or take Google's constant tinkering with its algorithm to fight googlebombing. That violates neutrality, but good for users.
