Soccer has long used assists as a measure of passing prowess. Is it a meaningless statistic?http://nyr.kr/1GXA1Pb

@NewYorker thats like saying a QB's stats are meaningless, they create the play and get an equal share of the credit, in the way of stats.

@NewYorker With respect, the 'assists' statistic is quite a recent phenomenon and not one that receives much attention over here.

@BHarmsworth @NewYorker It does in Fantasy Football. Many could now pick two notional 'best' teams, one for FF, one for reality #someoverlap

@jayessconn70 Unless you're Brazilian. But that's a long and complicated thing.

@NewYorker It's not "soccer"!!! It is FUTBOL! The AUTHENTIC! It's like saying "american" for the USA citizens, egocentric madafakas.

@NewYorker i would say deficated soccer fans dont care about passing stats. That being said, suggest studying team passing accuracy/wins

@NewYorker So it's no surprise that the stat is meaningless. It's merely a stat borrowed from other popular sports in USA.

@NewYorker Only in USA have assists been "long used", likely since b-ball & hockey used them. FIFA only began tracking it in the WC in '94

@NewYorker Yes, because before the guy/girl gets the goal there are potentially 10 others who assisted in the lead up to the goal.

@NewYorker Assists were never seen as an indicator of 'passing prowess', why would they be. they indicate a vision/ability to create chances
