“Revenge of the Nerds” would never be made in its current form today, yet its themes keep playing out, both onscreen and off: http://nyer.cm/DpmZcrk pic.twitter.com/BwNo00q7ax

I watched The Godfather recently and I really don't think the Corleones are the good guys.

There are some 80s classics though, that portray the sexual assaulters as the villains as opposed to the heroes, which Back to the Future did. @iancrouchpic.twitter.com/aKKsXkFfYS

In 2002 I took a writing class in Chicago, and the screenwriter for this movie was signed on as an occasional drop-in advice giver. Even back then the news that he was responsible for this was met with more puzzlement than admiration. The themes had already aged out of acceptance

Yes because culture ages just like software or gadgets. I hope you realise this worldview makes you only as intelligent as the last few people you've heard.

Saw this earlier this year after about 15 years of seeing it last. Man, it doesn't age well. Felt quite icky in a few places.

I still like it because it's a silly cartoon, and the people, particularly progressives, who don't like it have become the Religious Right of the 80s.

It's interesting to get to an age where you can actually witness attitudes change. Personally I think even for light hearted frat movies it's a good thing that rapey themes are not likely to be accepted. What do I know

"Rapey"? Is that all the movie is about? Sure the "relationship" between Louis and Betty is "crude" (nerd and cute girl), but what about Gilbert and Judy where it's two nerds who fall in love. It doesn't fit the article's inane narrative.

It's not all its about. I'm not reducing the film down to just this. But there are a couple of choice scenes that wouldn't get made today and that is probably a good thing. Not calling for censorship, I didn't weep for mankind whilst watching it. Just thought it was interesting

But context is important. The panty raid/camera installation was payback from the nerds after they were humiliated. It's okay to humiliate male nerds, but it's not okay to humiliate women, if they humiliate said nerds. That's why taking this movie seriously is inane.

Exactly. My problem is with people, like the article's author, who do take it seriously.

I think it's a lousy idea that a crude, live-action comedy has to be the scapegoat to well-meaning but clueless authoritians. The Righteous Left has become the Religious Right, thanks to #Dolt45.

One of the "nerds" impersonated the boyfriend of a popular girl and had sex w/her. She was surprised yet "liked it in the end" when he revealed himself. They ended up together. It was disgusting because he took away her ability to choose whom she had sex with. #RevengeOfTheNerds

The "nerd" was wearing the popular girl's boyfriend's costume and when she tried to remove the mask (that he picked up before approaching her), he gently dissuaded her and continued with the act knowing that she thought he was someone else.
