This picture looks like it was made the same year #BrettKavanuagh sexually assaulted a 15-year old girl.

I feel like you all at the New Yorker might not be setting this photographer & author up for success releasing this article now with that headline. And not mentioning her work spans decades in the lede & isn’t some kind of MAGA era attempt to redefine whiteness. My 10¢.
-
Actually the photos are disturbing in some wats. Others a feeling, when you look at them, it's like the photo is exposing a dying culture, that myth of pure whiteness, the ugliness is just beyond view but you can see it if you look closely. It's different in each pic.
-
One woman is barefoot, in a sun dress, but her eyes and the darkness just beyond her. It's really disturbing and uncomfortable to look at. Which I think the artist intended. Creepy even in some cases or threatening.
-
Agreed and I like your analysis. The women — less so the kids — to me don’t appear to be glorying in their whiteness & the message I get isn’t that they’re an ideal. They look isolated and wary to me. The shot of the mother with her toddler in the water is a little menacing even.
-
You caught that too?! Yeah, it was menacing and dark wasn't It? Yeah, the kids do seem very wary, like they're afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing. I remember feeling like that around my stepfather. A more rascist, bigoted, homophobic asshole couldn't be found.
-
I’m sorry, he sounds like an absolute joy to have been around. The photos & your story remind me of that photo by Sally Mann of the teenaged girl standing awkwardly & distantly next to her Mom’s boyfriend. She said she couldn’t get the girl to stand closer & it’s a tense photo.
-
My stepfather was a vicious, evil, malignant narcicist. He should never have been allowed to take care of a houseplants let alone children. I prosecuted him when I was a teen. If I hadn't, I would most likely have tried to kill him.
-
That must have been hell to go through & scary to do. I’m glad you’re here on the other side. :)

At this point I'm wondering how The Onion will ever stay in business.

I hear you! Them and SNL. Half the time I see real, genuine news stories & I can't tell if they're real or satire.
