The Kavanaugh nomination is a referendum on the #MeToo movement—on whether the goodness of successful men should be taken for granted, and whether the women who have suffered abuse should remain silent lest they sully sterling reputations.http://nyer.cm/saOx0L2

"... a referendum on whether the goodness of successful men should be taken for granted" ??? A ridiculous & cloyingly ingratiating statement. You also forgot to mention "rich" and "white" - when referring to these so-called "good men."

I hear you, but I didn't read it that way... my take was it was sarcastic and arch. Maybe too arch... The New Yorker can veer towards shooting its arrows out from its "literary tweed" tower.

A coworker of mine had a funny story about this sort of atmosphere. She worked for elderly publisher in 1960's. Think rings of pipe smoke, poetry readings with sherry and cheese, and a rumpled portly dude shouting: "Brrrriiiiing me my Brrriiieee!"

Changing now, but even in DC, poetry readings on Northwest side of DC can still get a bit "Wine and Cheesy." They make me itch!

If Brett Kavanaugh is approved by the Senate, the scandal will inevitably roll on and damage the reputation of the US Supreme Court. He should withdraw and seek a quiet life with his family.

When Clinton lied under oath about CONSENSUAL SEX, Kavenaugh sought to have his “revolting behavior” revealed to the American people “piece by painful piece”. Clinton was impeached and disbarred.Brett’s turn! Hi so own words: https://www.archives.gov/files/research/kavanaugh/releases/kavanaugh8.15.98.pdf …

It’s about truth... and Kavenaugh’s inability to tell it. It’s also about astounding hypocrisy. And an illegitimate POTUS trying to steal yet another SC seat when a scandal free popular vote winner was not allowed a scandal free SC nominee to get a hearing.

It is a referendum on whether anyone, regardless of sex, can make an accusation with no details, cite witnesses who deny the story, remember only parts which cannot be investigates and have this destroy someones career and life. It is a referendum on due process.
