For a relative comparison, islamic slave trade trade lasted from VIII to XIX c. - 1200 Years. And every male were castrated (the 3 pieces) before transport to muslim countries. (hence no Black-arabian problem)pic.twitter.com/84IMlwT6SC

It is insane how little people know about slavery. The only whites to actually /capture/ slaves after the Roman Empire were the Portuguese, and in a constrained way. The biggest market for slaves was the middle east. And yes, slavery was in the New World before Columbus.

So a thief can offer to sell me any number of stolen items. I can simply not buy. Same for slave traders. Just because they had sellers didn’t mean they had to buy. Especially since they thought their Christianity made them superior to the “uncivilized” Africans 😖

Very interesting article. Dealing with the past is complicated. We may not be responsible for our ancestors' crimes but we still often uphold the systems they put in place for our benefit. It's good reading about this from such a different perspective than usual.

I'm adopted, but some great-granduncle Dixi Crosby at Dartmouth was instrumental in turning crude oil into fuel for the first time, thus ushering in the Oil Age.
