The question for the Church now, given the astounding scale of the dysfunction, arching from the Americas to Europe, Africa, the Philippines, and Australia, is: What in Catholic culture caused this debauchery? http://nyer.cm/JiBGrSL

No! That’s the second question: the first is arrest all who were perpetrators; arrest all who covered up; Admit and make full restitution to those wounded and hurt...then Purgatory. But it’s not unique to this church or church institutions. Let the church be a moral catalyst!

A complete lack of accountability for an insular hierarchy guaranteed by a systemically disempowered laity. There are no checks and balances, no credible source of power to balance the priestly caste.

Catholicism is over. It may take many years to peter out, but it's done. So is the GOP, The Russian Mob, and the stinking corruption and greed destroying our planet. Optimistic? Maybe, but I'll bet on it.

Unfettered access to victims by the perpetrators and blind dedication to the protection of the institution by the hierarchy. The hierarchy forgot that the institutional church is not the Body of Christ. @Pontifex

The Church has long known the answer. It is a failed business plan. Celibate priests and no god.

Celibacy cuts down the number of candidates, leaving a lot of weird guys to choose from. It's counterproductive. Then there's the hierarchical structure and the need to hush up scandals "for the sake of the community".

After being raised in a staunchly Catholic home and after attending 12 yrs of Catholic schools, I am still recovering from the experience of purported exclusivity and betrayal. It'll never be complete. And with every report, I cannot grasp how anyone remains affiliated.
