A well written and considered letter, but the fact remains that not only did you invite him, you announced him as the headliner. This was a cynical ploy to sell tickets. There are many, many people who could draw a crowd. You just chose the racist one with the bad ideas.

Worse yet, Remnick admits they were going to pay Bannon. Money would have gone to a white nationist instead of to journalism. Shameful.
-
@karaswisher aha -- they were going to pay him! -
I wonder if the payment would have been disclosed at the beginning of any interview they published?
-
There seems to be some travel costs and weird honorarium. But it is not how we operate.
-
Wrong. It IS how you operate.
-
FWIW, almost every conference pays its “keynote” and “headline” speakers. Let’s not make generalizations beyond that one fact.
-
Kara Swisher is defending Remnick's idiotic choices because she is hoping to interview Bannon herself for his breathtaking insights on "tech." Go check out her profile if you think I am kidding.

Why would you invite Steve Bannon to headline New Yorker Festival? I submit to you a worthy candidate: Colin Kaepernick. You can reach him .

I absolutely agree. The New Yorker could not find a better person to have at the festival, than Colin Kaepernick.

The only explanation is that David Remnick is one of them. If you aren't one ... you would NEVER consider extending the invitation.
-
You have a very strong point.
-
oh yeah very strong point–Remnick is definitely alt-right ...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9e3pHgY5G1U …

Cannot emphasize enough what a strong point that ishttps://twitter.com/jelani9/status/1036772748582952961 …

I'm sorry–I just keep coming back to this simply prescient insight. Strong, strong point.https://twitter.com/adamdavidson/status/1036758418533625856 …

Sorry, my teen boys would have had an immediate gut reaction to Bannon. If you don't get an immediate & strong "NO FUCKING WAY" ... you have to ask yourself why. Bannon is gutter scum, filth.
-
He explained why. Whether you accept that or not is up to you. But you are replacing that justification with your own hyperbole... which I assure you the internet does not require.
-
Listen everyone, it *might* be possible to have a nuanced debate about journalism ethics in light of a rising nationalist movement that, on the one hand, cannot be ignored, yet on the other hand can capitalize on the exposure provided by media coverage.

Nothing wrong with a “rigorous interview.” When you do it for an audience and make it your festival headliner, it becomes a performance. Brannon’s no longer speaking to you, but to the audience. I hope the reaction gets you to understand the difference.
-
Autocorrect seems to really dislike someone named “Brannon.”
-
It's been a rough day.
-
Lol what?
-
You bad person! You Brannon! Autocorrect’s got you pegged, fella!
