A well written and considered letter, but the fact remains that not only did you invite him, you announced him as the headliner. This was a cynical ploy to sell tickets. There are many, many people who could draw a crowd. You just chose the racist one with the bad ideas.

Worse yet, Remnick admits they were going to pay Bannon. Money would have gone to a white nationist instead of to journalism. Shameful.

Also worth reminding that Remnick’s @newyorker broke the Kalief Browder story. David ran Jennifer Gonnerman’s incredible @NewYorker story on what happened to him at Riker’s Island — a story central to the movement to close that prison. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/10/06/before-the-law ….

Listen everyone, it *might* be possible to have a nuanced debate about journalism ethics in light of a rising nationalist movement that, on the one hand, cannot be ignored, yet on the other hand can capitalize on the exposure provided by media coverage.

Nothing wrong with a “rigorous interview.” When you do it for an audience and make it your festival headliner, it becomes a performance. Brannon’s no longer speaking to you, but to the audience. I hope the reaction gets you to understand the difference.
