"Studied linguistics? How many languages do you speak?" Ugh. Articles like this perpetuate the popular error that "linguist" (the academic sense) is synonymous with "polyglot."

Luis Miguel, a question I've always wanted to ask an improbable learned speaker of both Japanese and Guarani: they're similar, isn't? To what degree? If true what does it imply?
-
Phonologicaly, a bit; vowels and syllabic structure look similar. Japanese is an Subject-Object-Verb language. Guaraní is mostly SVO. Neither have articles, etc. Similarities are entirely coincidental.
-
Was SVO a contamination of Spanish & Portuguese? And similar words? I had no trouble explaining a native speaker Curitiba - the place of kury. Curitiba stands amid once vast Araucaria forests with its edible nuts. A coincidence from the country where they come from?
