Beto O’Rourke’s viral comments on the N.F.L.’s anthem-kneeling controversy sounded as if a history professor had interrupted a political rally to rattle off topics from his “Civil Rights in America” syllabus: http://nyer.cm/lnr9nIP pic.twitter.com/qIcrrummUj

.@jelani9 Outstanding, insightful piece by Jelani Cobb. Beto O’Rourke comments on the anthem-kneeling is an A+ in “American Rights.” And as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reminded us, one of the most powerful rights in the American Constitution is “the right to protest for rights!”pic.twitter.com/8VSLPTls3L

Um, I am not sure if you are aware of this, but there are no 1A rights in the workplace. The 1A prevents the GOVERNMENT from restricting your speech. It does not prevent an EMPLOYER. So, if the NFL wanted to shut down the protests, it's THEIR right to do so.

Knowledge matters. Empathy matters. Don't dismiss this man's comments as an opportunity to "rattle off topics." We should all "rattle" so cogently when the right to protest is challenged.

Yes, and part of that knowledge should include the understanding that the 1A does not apply to employers. An employer, such as an NFL team, or the league itself, can prohibit speech in the workplace. The 1A applies to the GOVERNMENT restricting speech.

Thank you for reminding me of the distinction. I suppose I’m thinking that the NFL only seemed to have a problem with it after a government leader started demanding punitive action.

The way this tweet is worded makes me feel like you think it's a bad thing? When it's a great thing, our elected leaders should be smart and be able to talk about our history and how it shapes our present.

Beto's comments were more than mere "rattling off topics" from the Civil Rights Era. He emphasized the importance of civil disobedience and freedom of speech and protest through the ages, including now.

His comments displayed an ignorance of the Constitution. The 1A does not apply to employers or the workplace. An employer CAN restrict speech on the jobsite. And an NFL field is certainly the jobsite.

Beto speaks off the cuff and wisely without calling names and you seem to be critical of that @NewYorker. Actually we need MORE leaders who see the value of PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION. that’s what democracy is all about. The ability to speak up about the wrongs in society.

Except this was not wisdom, but ignorance. You see, there is no right to free speech in the workplace. Employers can restrict speech on the jobsite. The 1A prohibits the GOVERNMENT from restricting speech, not employers

Never the less a wrong is a wrong and we, as honest citizens only manage to get those wrongs corrected by calling attention to them. Peaceful demonstration calls attention and THEN just maybe things change. Some people use any excuse to prohibit that change.

I'm sorry, but the 'wrong' was 'Beto' (FFS, what pandering) talking about the RIGHT to protest on the job. One prerequsite of serving in the House or Senate should be a working knowledge of the Constitution. One cannot speak 'wisely' when their comments are factually inaccurate

How about a prerequisite for being President? Surely a President should have a working knowledge of the responsibilities of the job. I see no evidence of that knowledge in Trump. He just sees the opportunity to use the power of the office to wreak havoc.
