The story of Leonard Bernstein—who was born on this day in 1918—plays like a modern American fable: http://nyer.cm/0IPUAYd  #TNYarchivepic.twitter.com/euVTBsLWyA

"In childhood, Bernstein was an omnivorous consumer of music, blissfully unaware of the distinctions between high and low, élite and pop."

Any tribute to Leonard Bernstein would be incomplete without a copy of Tom Wolfe's Radical Chic, the Black Panther's party at Lenny's. “I’ve never met a Panther—this is a first for me!” http://nymag.com/news/features/46170/#print …

I saw interview with Mr. Bernstein done shortly before his death. What I remember most vividly was his saying as he held a lighted cigarette, something to effect of: "For all of my success, I've never been able to stop THIS!" (referring to SMOKING) which contributed to his death.

Bernstein was FORCED into quite a # of ENCORES as audience REFUSED to call-it-a-night! Leonard remains a HERO of mine. He & my parents taught me 2 appreciate classical music, travel, different music forms & BEAUTY! Happy birthday, Mr. B.! Hope to see you On Other Side.💐❤️👏

We had box-seats close to stage amongst The Elite dining on treats and sipping wine from their picnic-baskets. Bernstein was as always PASSIONATE, EXPRESSIVE as he pulled EVERYTHING from orchestra! Well-dressed people SHOUTED, WAVED THEIR ARMS thru several curtain-calls!

Children were DRESSED, APPROPRIATELY to be guests of Mr. Bernstein as well as to be on TV. Well-behaved, exhibiting RAPT ATTENTION to everything he said. Had we lived in NYC I DEFINITELY would have attended his telecasts! FASCINATING stuff. What a BLESSING he continues to be!

Been IN LOVE with this gentleman since my CHILDHOOD!! His televised YOUNG PEOPLES' CONCERTS shown each week would NEVER FLY these days and young people show it! MAGNIFICENT composer and conductor. Taught us about classifications of INSTRUMENTS, SYMPHONIC orchestras, MUSIC FORMS.
