The Eagles have, once again, unseated Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Does this make them the most important artist of the recorded-music era?http://nyer.cm/MSZXPLm

Oh come on. Since when is the only criteria for important art how much money it made? Gross.

Certainly the greatest American rock group, and it's not even close.

I saw REM in an Athens Georgia bar in 1981, maybe '82. They had a nice run,

Super jealous. I'd say if you look at their body of work, there's no American band that was consistently that good for that long. Damn near unimpeachable from Murmur through New Adventures in Hi-Fi

Yeaaa... R.E.M. was good, but I just don't see how they come close to the Eagles.. by any metric.

My metric is that nearly all of R.E.M.'s music is good, and that most of the Eagles' music is not.

The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Zepplin, NWA, Aerosmith, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Beach Boys, OutKast, Chuck Berry... and at least 50 others would like a word.

Hard to compare a "greatest Hits" album which are songs from multiple albums, to an individual album like Thriller.

No it doesn't, and "important" is a stupid word in this kind of context anyway. Doesn't your high-toned magazine have more interesting things to publish? The Eagles' greatest hits album selling many millions of copies is a very, very old story.

Oh, sorry, whatever - I'm not a troll! But it is a dumb, cheap, journalistic trope: faux-controversial headline for minor non-story. As a journalist myself, I like to see a higher standard maintained in such things! And the Eagles were never really "important," just very famous.
