You know what tho- I saw it Fri. night in packed theater in Manhattan. Arrived late. I had assumed audience would be mostly Asian, but based on how few ppl laughed/cheered the hardest at the same things I did, I suspected not. 1/

I was right- on way out I saw it was MAYBE, tops, 10%. Thank you NJ for getting this movie made - that’s to be massively celebrated- but that others are watching it (almost as if Asians are people, deserving to be the subject of stories viewed by all) is the next-level triumph

It's TOTALLY racist, but I'm guessing the creator gets a pass under one of the many established racism exceptions. I'm probably not supposed to say this, but I think the exceptions should be eliminated and we should just universally cool it with the racism.

Yeah, I’m conflicted as well, even though I find out the cartoonist is Vietnamese. Racist or not, it IS a clever insight.

I also noticed that the name of the cartoonist was potentially Asian, however as a white male I assume that if I point out any distinction of any type based on race I am playing with fire. So much easier if we are just all not racist I think.

Overall, absolutely agree. This may have been more appropriate within the asian community.

Explanation for the clueless: the film is called Crazy Rich Asians (which I'm seeing in a few hours). The artist is depicting the joy of a theater of Asian people finally getting to see themselves centered & represented in a major US motion picture. Why are y'all so confused?

It was drawn by a Vietnamese. Can't be. I don't get it anyway.
