I teach my students the unvarnished truth about the holocaust using video and survivor stories. Our kids can take a lot more than we think they can. They can handle the truth.

The truth always works best! Give children more credit. I read the book Hiroshima at 10 and read it over and over.. never forget it's message and documentation.

I was 7 when my parents let/made me watch the Holocaust miniseries on tv. Four nights of horror and hope. Aside from Anne Frank, I read books about the Holocaust AT THE LIBRARY because I was too young to check them out. Give kids an honest view - they can handle it.

Jane Yolen did this quite well with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Devil%27s_Arithmetic … … using magical realism and extensive narrative skills to illuminate the connection between a girl and the experiences of her grand aunt whom she loves specially.

It needs to be sad with reality with a sad ending but with a glimmer of hope, or the main character has a bit of hope inside to get then through the sad times
