Why are mobsters like Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Arnold Rothstein, and Charles “Lucky” Luciano held up as mythic figures, even heroes of a sort, not just by their families but by the general public? @mkonnikova examines: http://nyer.cm/iO81yj4  #TNYarchivepic.twitter.com/3EekMA2Z7v

Mobsters are not heroes. Their lives are not romantic. They nor their families have any peace. Mobsters are criminals that hurt and use people to gain riches. They are immoral and cruel.

They’re not mythic figures. They may have achieved some comic book mythical standing for buying bread for poor neighbors, but they were murderous criminals and are remembered as no more than that. @realDonaldTrump will be remembered the same way - for the criminal he was.

Nice article María. I think the mafia movies helped to create the mythic figures. Here is a list that I made on @IMDb > https://www.imdb.com/list/ls026270180/ …

Surely you're talking about the "actors" playing the part of the criminals you mentioned, nobody holds a serial killer in high esteem unless they themselves have serious mental health issues.

Probably a similar explanation like why folks cling to religion as a hope of salvation. Everyday life becomes unfulfilling, boring, and they seek answers. Hollywood provides these escapes which some romanticize vicariously seeing themselves as that powerful albeit criminal.
