the social costs for a black person in awakening the sleeping dragon of white fragility often prove so high that many black people don’t risk pointing out discrimination when they see it.

“why do you have to make everything about race”
-
America is about race. Racism is a billionaire dollar business and it thrives world wide like it or not.

Wow, that headline uses a lot of hand-wringing to find an issue with the very concept of "empathy".
-
Having no regard for the impact of your words on those who are experiencing WS violence (as opposed to most WW, who are usually passive bystanders) isn’t empathy. PoC police their language all the time to spare WP’s feelings. It isn’t too much to ask the same.

So what would she like white people to do besides buy her book?
-
In general terms. Learn about racism, without getting all defensive. Recognise that they have done, said or thought racist things in the past. Change their behaviour to avoid doing so in the future.
-
And speak up to other white people about their racist behavior (including white fragility) when you see it. That one is REALLY hard for a lot of otherwise progressive white people. Maybe all of us.

If you watch HBO’s Westworld, here’s an analogy: New Yorker Article: “Most Hosts Don’t Know They Are Hosts, But They Are, In Fact, Hosts” Responses Below Article: “This doesn’t look like anything to me.”

Perfect analogy!!

Bravo! Excellent article, though, as a black woman, I’m not going to run out and purchase this book. As the article states in the end, black people could “write this book” in our sleep.
-
I requested my library requisition it.
-
Not a bad idea, but I literally have a stack of books to get to...

Read on.
