Men often wanted Joni Mitchell to be a wife, a muse, a siren, or a star. Instead they got a genius: http://nyer.cm/cHPbY1s pic.twitter.com/pktghtMXtf

I read main reason JM gave he daughter up was the fact she realized she had true, deep artistic talent & a dream she needed to fulfill. It's impossible for us to know the fear she felt at 19. Men don't face such choices, they have someone - a wife or partner - sadly women DON'T

And she never had to change herself, ever 'mold' into a set 'type'. She never has lost her 'voice'. Her music will forever transcend as she is timeless. A beautiful soul of generations that will forever be the words in our head, then sung. And I really love her name ❤️

She said it herself in "Woman of Heart and Mind": And I give you my scorn and my praise You think I'm like your mother Or another lover or your sister Or the queen of your dreams Or just another silly girl When love makes a fool of me

Every woman singer/songwriter in the business today owes her a debt. Mitchell made it possible for women to be accepted as creative, artistic performers in American music.

She came from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where we just put a plaque on a gazeebo to honour her. Started as naming a bridge and kind of moved down from there.

Men want a lot of things which have very little to do with becoming a #selfactualized woman also known to patriarchy as genius if they like the music, a threat if they don't. #justsayin #feminism
