        I think this Wikipedia entry defines essential oils as well as I can. Note the French for petrol / gas is essence; it is hydrophobic and volatile. None are essential, many smell good, some have a pharmacological effect, decent research is limited.

        Why “sorry”? Valuable contribution to a broad topic, though experience and wisdom could expand your article’s definition, but may be a legal issue. Enlightening how term “essential” is actually the adjective for “essence” on this topic. Thank you!
