Never before in American politics has there been so plausible a reason for exclusion from the common meal as the act of working for Donald Trump, Adam Gopnik writes.http://nyer.cm/rIBj608

This is exactly the overboard response that drives people further right. We all took history class and know that Americans can actually go to war with each other, put each other in internment camps, etc. Push back against the impulse to destroy common public decency.

It wasn't uncivil behavior behavior to ask her to leave. Instead, it was like telling a bully that because of their behavior, they aren't welcome. The bully then has a decision to make. It was a teachable moment and hopefully, SHS learned something. Behavior has consequences.

Perhaps you exaggerate for effect, but I find this kind of response perplexing. Separating children from parents is cruel and unusual and should be aggressively opposed. But a Hitler comparison? Are there no degrees between ‘ethically right’ and ‘equivalent to genocide’?

As a person of Jewish descent, I'm familiar enough with history to know that the rounding up and caging of human beings doesn't have a happy ending. Maybe stop it now before we get to the killing phase?

Sometimes civility requires unpleasant public expressions of disagreement. Civility is about maintaining and expanding a community, which means that it is also entirely consistent with rejecting people/groups that are seeking to destabilize/destroy the community.
