The questions that Thomas Mann pondered during his California exile—What is the future of democracy? Can the civilized world hold back the forces of irrationalism?—are very much in the air.http://nyer.cm/6yj43ND

How has the novel changed from The Magic Mountain and Hans to say, Infinite Jest and Hal? What does it say about democracy?

No idea. I can only say that I read the magic mountain two times in my life and infinite jest only for a third before giving up.

I might read them again, it’s been a few years, a lot has changed. I think I’ll read them together. The pre war ship builder and post industrial tennis player side by side. That should be interesting.

How odd. I visited Lithuania lady year and happened upon the Thomas Mann house there in Nida. Now I find he had one here in LA. Is one of us following the other?

And he knew before how things really stand, you can find many "visions" not only in his letters and puvlications, but also in his short stories - and he was not too optimistic

Fortunately, California told him to scram.
