Caleb Crain's 2007 essay "Twilight of the Books" affects everything I see hear and read. I recommended it to my bookclub friends they complained it was too long didn't finish it.

I’ve been rereading HG Wells’ short stories and ask myself if the decline in reading mirrors the decline in writing. Apparently the Pall Mall Gazette circa 1900 had a much better fiction offering than you do today
