Except it's not a statistical blip, he misses lots of penalties. He's missed his last four.

Isn't it four out of the last 7? Not good, but getting that twisted is a statistical blip.
-
That's what I thought, but ESPN said missed his last four for Barcelona and Argentina. Either way, it's not a statistical blip. The greatest player in the world is not good at taking penalties.
-
in fairness, his overall conversion rate is 81% which is not bad. Only the very best penalty takers have rates into the 90s - Le Tissier is the best I can think of - not sure if there are many above 95%
-
Is that right? It's four out of five. Trouble is it's Messi and you expect the greatest player of his generation to do better.

Goal had an article on it recently - but I agree with you, would definitely expect his return to be better given his abilityhttp://www.goal.com/en/news/messi-vs-ronaldo-how-do-their-penalty-records-compare/1kck74ga1hshu1seo7vgowmqav …

Anyway, this original point in the
@NewYorker about penalties being arbitrary is such nonsense. -
Yeah, I agree - "arbitrary" makes it sounds like they are 50-50 chance - which doesn't really explain the players who convert over 90%
