What gives Canadians backbone alongside their gift for compromise, allowing them to bend equably and then snap back sharply? http://nyer.cm/NC5RmAv

Canada has never tried to run the world. They don't have control issues, and they have managed to be reasonably inclusive and have strong democratic institutions. They are a young enough country to still have idealism. They are also the largest contributer to UN Peacekeepers.

The author talks about the decline in 🇺🇸 "social capital"-a sub-indice of a larger prosperity study project by the Legatum Inst. It shows overall 🇺🇸 prosperity as stagnated & postulates this as a contributor 2 the rise of Trump populism. http://www.http://www.prosperity.com/application/files/9214/7808/9761/Legatum_Prosperity_Index_2016.pdf#page9prosperity.com/application/files/9214/7808/9761/Legatum_Prosperity_Index_2016.pdf#page9 …pic.twitter.com/vHcZ68irZC

Side note. If it is true that "social capital" is improved by the engagement of a diverse population in social organizations & indeed sporting events, Trump's attack on the NFL seems even more nefarious. An intentional act to divide 🇺🇸s further & part of a populist playbook.

We 🇨🇦s bond over curling & hockey. Curling symbolizes our flexibility & how we prefer our social engagements (politics especially) competitive but polite. Hockey is our Crazy Canuk side, a willingness to go into a corner if necessary and fight as a nation if threatened. 🇨🇦😀

Canada's National sports are actually lacrosse (summer) and hockey (winter). Just an FYI. While the curling vs hockey comparison is facile and cute, it is, sadly, an error. Please revise this at your earliest convenience.

We (USA) only have a small 18 billion dollar trade deficit with them and compared to other nations... That's not so bad. But 18 Billion could go to securing schools and such.

Check your own governments figures: the USA has a trade surplus with Canada. Don't listen to Trump, or his synchophants. Check the facts.

Ahh... Where did you get that figure? I got my figure from a liberal leaning news agency. Also Bloomberg corroborated it.
