Bill Clinton, who can write, has hooked up with James Patterson, who can’t. This unlikely pact has resulted in “The President Is Missing,” which we must, not without reservations, describe as a thriller: http://nyer.cm/DANL1hD pic.twitter.com/605LpaL61d

Well, not everyone can write as brilliantly as you. Please direct the 350 MILLION readers of Patterson’s books to where they may enjoy your literary genius.

That volume of readers means he's popular, it doesn't mean he's good... (see Dan Brown). Oh, and if that's total books sold many will be to the same people.

There is a magic to writing in a manner that attracts so many readers worldwide, translated into so many languages. Awfully condescending to label it as not good when 350 million readers would disagree.

Not condescending in the slightest, you're stating that the measure of good art is popularity. On that basis Van Gogh is rubbish as he sold nothing during his lifetime and McDonald's creates better food than a Michelin starred chef as more people eat there...

Not quite. My argument is that popularity does not negate good writing. You’re the one who’s adamant that mass appeal somehow renders one’s talent moot.

Not at all... You very clearly stated your argument based purely on the fact that Patterson had 350 MILLION readers (capitals from your tweet). It's only since then that you've tried to also claim his literary merit...

Not at all. I resent the summary dismissal of an author’s talent simply BECAUSE of his or her popularity&mass appeal. The point that you seem to resist is that literary merit is subjective&inasmuch as the LACK of mass appeal does not dictate LACK of merit, nor does the reverse.

I have no interest in buying a book from someone who gutted welfare, exploded the prison population, crushed workers with NAFTA, and got rid of New Deal banking regulation which resulted in the economy crashing within a decade.

yeah, but what about the ghostwriters who are probably actually writing the book 🤔
