Anthony Bourdain will be remembered for his infectious enthusiasms, his brash exuberance, and his capacity for reinvention: http://nyer.cm/6PAfuS4 pic.twitter.com/6Uje8KBN6T

I also think focusing on their perceived "joie de vivre" is dismissive of the power of depression and despair, the plight of those suffering from it (who we sometimes perceive to be living happy lives) and their abilities to hide it from others (and sometimes from themselves).

I only think of her in a loving way. To this day, I can not fathom why she did that. There were no “indicators”.

Sorry for your loss. "I can not fathom why she did that." That's kind of my point.

I have to wonder what this does to people silently suffering from depression. What behavior does it encourage? Does it say that projecting positive sentiments, attitudes and beliefs is more important than honestly expressing your despair and misery?

1/2 Depression is an “insidious insider”. People who are that depressed, do not vocalize or share their feelings. They suffer in silence, encapsulated in their own internal misery. Depression is a disease that has been overlooked for far too long.

I don't disagree with any of that, but I do question how unhelpful society's valuing of the "positive" and its desire to always focus on it further discourages people from expressing the "negative" (especially if deep down, all a person feels is negative).
