At my college graduation, my dad shared this vision: me as a successful professor, surrounded by books, & writing into old age. I was only 21 & had no such intentions. Today, I received my acceptance for a PhD program. He didn’t live to see this, but knew it before I did😢

My heart is heavy. I’ll never be able to understand such hate. My thoughts and prayers are with the Jewish community and the worshippers at Chabad of Poway. No one should fear entering a place of worship. No one should have to suffer this heartache.

My heart is breaking after today’s deadly shooting at Chabad Congregation in San Diego—on the last day of Passover and 6 months to the day after the Tree of Life shooting. We as a nation must confront the terrifying rise of religious hate and violence. Love trumps hate.

A friend of mine is having a little girl, and I just bought this book for her library. It’s never too early to instill girl power 😇

For the morning crowd, I need your help. My friend's son, Arthur, has been missing since last Thursday. He's from Cincinnati but may be in New Orleans now. There's concern he was lured there under false pretenses. Please, please RT.

for giving a voice to marginalized writers, bringing people together in the writing community, and for showing how sincerity and authenticity are important in any type of diversity initiative (and that it can be done right!) Thank you for all that you do❤️

Diversity in schools, organizations, companies, literature, etc. is good for EVERYBODY. It benefits all those involved: people from marginalized communities and people from majority groups. It is a win-win...but only if it is approached in the right way. 4/4

And diversity in ANY facet is not just important because it is the right thing to do. Diversity in the workplace, schools, literature, and many other areas has been shown to increase innovation, productivity, creativity, insight. 4/5

Most people think of diversity as a "category." But that is the antithesis of what diversity means. It can't fit one box...that's the point!3/5

It's not that employers, organizations, schools, intend to exclude (some do and some don't), but even the most well-intentioned may miss opportunities for this type of growth. 2/5

A complaint I often hear is "I can't find diverse candidates, but I want more diversity." So, one more time: hiring POC or adding more "diversity" to *fill in the blank here* does not mean going out and "looking for it," it means creating an environment that does not exclude. 1/5

In 1st grade, I was fascinated with Easter eggs. My mother ended up buying me a kit,& we dyed eggs to my heart’s content. When a friend asked why, Mama said, “There’s nothing wrong with teaching kids different celebrations.” Her words stuck with me ever since.

I really hate that twitter doesn’t have an edit feature. It’s torture for this writer to see her typos and not be able to fix them. I don’t even care if they retain the edit history to ensure “originality” and ownership of one’s words. It’s the typos that bother me!

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I don’t have words for the kind of evil that commits that these godless crimes. Synagogues, mosques, churches, temples...each terrorist attack more unsettling, baffling, inconceivable. My heart is with the people...

Jews killed while praying in a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Christians killed while praying in churches in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Muslims killed while praying in Christchurch, NZ. There is a common thread here. The “People of the Book” are hurting more & more. Humanity is under threat.

After I spent an hour doing an intensive diversity training in which I covered marginalized communities, ethics, equity, & equality in the workplace...a male audience member approached me, “You are just too darn cute. How old are you?” People assume I’m younger than I really am🙄

This is so frightening and becoming way too common. I’m glad this woman recorded it. I’m glad she was an ally. But, how many of these attacks go unrecorded and unnoticed?
