I can’t believe I have to say this, but Costco is not an acceptable place to buy a king cake for lab meeting.

  3. They say chess champions lose 20 lbs in a weeklong tournament despite just sitting there because they are exerting so much mental effort. When I'm in the final 2-week sprint for my R01, I FEEL like Im thinking as hard as a chess player, but so far I have not lost any weight.

Discussing Dubuc et al. 2014 intersexual selection in my primatology class. One of my students created a "terribly niche meme that her roommates didn't get but that I might appreciate." Being the nerd that I am, she's correct (photo from paper, meme shared w permission):

We have started doing behavioral training with our subjects in this cage, and we can get them to do some basic foraging tasks.

With this we can use clustering algorithms (here, UMAP), to automatically segment behavior into meaningful actions like sitting, walking, and climbing.

We will also share the model itself. It can do robust low error tracking of 13 joints at 30 Hz.

The paper goes over the cool tricks we developed to overcome the annotation problem. The result is a library of effectively 200,000 images, which we will share with the public when the paper is accepted.

We filmed a large number of videos and worked with Hive AI to annotate about 10,000 images.

So we built a large pen in which rhesus macaques could move freely. We placed 62 machine vision cameras around the pen at precise positions and angles. The walls are chroma key green to aid in segmentation.

Unlike humans, where there exist few large (million plus) annotated databases, nothing comparable works for monkeys. And the human networks don’t generalize - we tried! In our view, the annotation problem is THE major barrier to macaque tracking.

It turns out macaque tracking is a LOT harder than tracking worms, flies, or birds. They are big furry monochrome blobs with very little articulation, they display a lot of poses, and they are basically acrobats.

Excited to announce our bioRxiv paper describing OpenMonkeyStudio. This is a BIG three-lab project that took a LOT OF people working very hard a lot of time.

Bad news it’s only a palindrome if you’re the kind of psychopath serial killer who calls it “February zero two” instead of February 2 like most people.

East Antarctica is the coldest place on earth, and yet I was able to swim down a river under the ice-sheet. It was the most beautiful and terrifying experience of my life, and comes with an important message for us all. Please share.
