Just because plastic is collected doesn't mean it's recycled. As others point out, it's often burned or buried, so we shouldn't feel good about putting plastic in the recycling bin. This is also why we should not be using more plastic.

We've found that PET bottles are lightweight and stable and, when properly recycled by consumers, have a lighter environmental impact than packaging materials such as glass and aluminum.
