RACE IS A RISK FACTOR. Are you kidding me with this? For example...sickle cell anemia. The trait is found in something like 7% of African Americans. In whites...0.2%. This isn't racism. IT IS SCIENTIFIC FACT. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4584538/ …https://twitter.com/EpiEllie/status/1270727393867694081 …

Epidemiologists and statisticians, this👇🏼is our mess & we need to fix it. People learn this idea from the courses we teach & the papers we review & publish. It will only stop when we make it stop. Push back against “race is a risk factor”. It is not, racism is. https://twitter.com/JoelleARoberts/status/1270078251206094848 …

What is even worse? Our ability to treat African Americans, or any subset group in the US (Jewish people of European ancestry is another) is DIMINISHED by people failing to admit racial differences. We actually may HARM AFRICAN AMERICANS by this nonsense.

Science deals with fact, evidence and reality. If you deny any of those, you are harming the quest for scientific knowledge. Facts don't care about your feelings.

We as doctors should look at patients as individuals. Individuals with unique histories. And one of those factors, just one, is race. That will never change. Better get used to that fact.

And note that I accept there is structural racism. But correctly defining the data as have a racial aspect to it... Is not racism. Facts are never racist, by themselves.

Jews have higher rates of cystic fibrosis it’s not racism lol

I think the problem is in the terminology. That being Jewish is a risk factor for cystic fibrosis. In the way you’d say obesity is a risk factor for diabetes or hypertension. Your race might be correlated to conditions but it doesn’t put you at risk of getting them.

It will only stop when we start denying risk factors that are scientifically documented. Because science. Or something
