, a : At least since Francis Crick’s famous review of 1979, neuroscientists have dreamed of ways to identify all the neurons connected to a cell of interest. In the last decade this has become a reality through the widespread use of rabies virus tracers. 1/11

More w/ lab preprints! developed + thoroughly characterised to label neurons inputting those in your favourite genetic lines (opposite to Tango system). Results across many live flies ≈ those from one dead EM’d one

Second order thermo/hygrosensory projection neurons take this information to higher brain areas. We reconstructed the complete set, finding the same 32 types on left and right. They are more diverse than olfactory neurons in both shape and their 14 different target regions. 3/7

Temperature and humidity are crucial senses. In insects, they are mostly detected by the antennae (like smell). Sensory neurons project to “VP” glomeruli in the brain. Connectomics data found 7 (not 5) VP glomeruli & lab identified candidate receptor molecules. 2/7

This was a serious and painstaking investigation, done with the cooperation of its targets, resulting in a report that spares no malefactors and assigns serious consequences to powerful men.

Congrats to Barb! ...and agreed! I owe her so much. Learning to think about science from Barb was/remains a great gift (... learned a little from & there, too...)

TRP channel temperature gating mechanism illuminated by TRPV3 structures. We propose the temperature sensor is the TM domain that interacts differently with membrane lipids depending on temperature-induced phase transitions in the membrane.

Please RT! We currently have a 3 year position in Sydney Australia for a post doc interested in using CRISPR to study deadly toxin and venom mechanisms of action. Super fun project! Please see here:
