Detailed & clearly presented new work from on VNS & neuromod activation, which was read-out from ACh axon activity. By relating that to pupil size, they provide a way to assess VNS effects on cholinergic neuromod non-invasively in patients.

    a) Don’t ever, ever say “she GOT a Nature paper / he GOT a Cell paper.” b) Convince your institution to sign onto and hold them to it. c) Replace journal titles on your presentation slides with PubMed ID numbers.

These researchers find that “placeholding” errors double & multistep complex task errors triple after a night of sleep deprivation. In other words, distractions interrupting the work of a sleep-deprived person cause mistakes three times as often. Be careful & get your sleep!

Local dendritic calcium events exhibited spatial and/or head-direction tuning that was not identical to their parent soma. This indicates that dendrites in RSC fulfill the requirements for performing subcellular computations such as local coincidence detection during behavior.

To me one of the most important ways men can be an ally for women in academia is by standing up for women even when they are not around. Some of the harshest critiques of women in academia is when there aren’t any present in the room.

The most successful academics I know are outliers. If you love the science you are doing, don't worry about the averages (plus or minus SEM) presented in studies like this. Be your own data point and strive to be an outlier.

The review starts out in 1809 and builds a historical perspective. We identify critical developments and open questions along this timeline. We then review state-of-the-art methods that are reshaping how the field thinks about locus coeruleus function.
