"In this ambitious and readable book, Shubin blends his own research, epic tales from the history of science, and the latest discoveries in paleontology and genetics to tackle some of the biggest mysteries of evolution." Thank you ... !!

Take a trip to Antarctica. Here's a panorama of base camp in Jan, 2019...snowmobiles and home on Deception Glacier....

More fossil goodness. Antarctica. This day last year, on a shale loaded with fish. On a cliff above the blue ice of a glacier... fish in foreground. Beauty all around.

This time last rear— in Antarctica, on a cliff of Devonian bedrock over Deception Glacier. Kneeling over a pavement of 1000s of fish fossils.

4th Starred Review for SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED! “In the end, the genetic constructions of all creatures are variations on a theme; we are all related. An engaging, must-read for anyone with an interest in evolution.” Library Journal.

This time last year— establishing base camp on Deception Glacier, Antarctica with mountaineer, Forrest McCarthy. Ski planes, snowmobiles, Scott Tents flown in and we scurried to find and establish a camp near fossil sites. The rest of the team arrived over the next two days.

What's the worst professional advice you ever received? Mine: in 1987, during postdoc, prepping for a career doing paleontology and developmental biology a senior PI told me "Lose the paleontology; nobody will ever take you seriously."

"...From bacteria to brains, fish lungs to ballistic salamander tongues, Shubin decodes the surprising origins of the marvelous gadgets that have driven the riot of life’s diversity.” Sean B. Carroll, author of The Serengeti Rules

Planning our next expediton. It’s a big world so many places to look. So many possibilities. This is one of my favorite parts of fieldwork: finding the next site.
