To solve the biodiversity-climate crisis we don't need more scientific data. We need "a spiritual and cultural transformation - and scientists don't know how to do that" Gus Speth, American Environmental Lawyer.

Great graph illustrating challenge of stopping . Carbon intensity going down but too slow. Emissions/GDP halved over half a century. We have now 30 years to reduce them a further 90% (approx. needed to achieve 2C target). So decarbonisation must go about 3x faster.

Found some great new tree stats. Most forested county in NI? Tyrone at 28K ha. Least forested Armagh at 6K ha. Total NI coverage 112K ha with conifers outnumbering broadleaf rougly 2:1. And split pretty evenly between Forest Service and private. More here

I'm pro-EU but I recognise that CAP, agri-environment subsidies and broader environmental protections haven't worked... we've lost 60% of wildlife since 1970. It remains to be seen how post-BREXIT changes work out but this is potentially very positive:

A piece from me highlighting that diseases emerge from disrupted ecologies. In a world of environmental disruption, perhaps this will be an increasing phenomenon.

Fundamental pure blue-skies science is all very well but we face multiple catastrophes re: climate, biodiversity, pollution, invasives, plastics etc. We ain't got time nor $$$ for anything other than highly applied practical solutions research that makes a REAL-WORLD difference.

Mountain hares are in trouble but against the odds, a small group of hares have survived in the Peak District, establishing a population across this northern national park. But, they’re facing many threats:
