The is one of the best uses of preprints I've seen. In addition to the substantive contribution to our understanding of the current state of knowledge on Coronavirus, it highlights the good that can come from making research open so that it can be synthesized for public benefit.

    5) Funders need to think about how ensuring that this is part of projects, so that research is not extractive. I am thankful to for funding workshops where those researched get to hear about the research.

In my class on the design & governance of experiments, students with business experience have doubted whether organizations can ever value causal evidence. Today, we're talking about this quote by Donald Campbell about trapped administrators vs experimental decision-makers

I love Super Bowl statistics. (“No team that has failed to convert at least 35% of their 3rd downs has gone on to win” etc.) They are the best introduction to p-hacking that can be found outside major journals.

Or as put it here (): "The history of social technology is littered with good ideas that failed for years before anyone noticed." That insight turns out to generalize beyond the social technology literature.

This builds on last week's discussions of ethics, particularly the "good intentions problem": many interventions get deployed because they *seem* like a good idea to well-meaning people who...don't develop an adequate understanding of the problem before implementing "solutions."

This week in Behavioral Science Interventions we're covering problem analysis--studying the underlying nature of problems before intervening. To prep for tomorrow's discussion, students are reading Lewin (1946): "Action Research and Minority Problems"

But the suggestion that somehow race & sex are irrelevant to people's experience of the world, or that they are simply questions of "pigments and reproductive organs" is frankly asinine, and clearly not an argument made in good faith.
