The irony is that Brazil is still doing infinitely better than France, the UK, Italy, Spain. It may the be because Brazil is in a different point in the logistic curve or climate or BCG, whatever. My main hypothesis is that Brazil intervened earlier with social distancing.
But the funny thing is that the "populist" Bolsonaro is doing better than the "technocratic", "pro-Science" Macron.
Bolso is surfing the tides of history better.
From what I have heard, Bolso is soon going to get Pango-militarized by elite generals. So if by surfing the tides of history you mean ending up in history books as a cautionary tale then yes.
I think that Brazil will become a mess in the next months as the temporary UBI program halts. But, he still has a lot of support the the lower ranks of the military, police, middle class. The last chance of an impeachment is if Coronachan kills as many people as possible.
Military power is always top-down in essence for a reason. Lower rank ideology for its popularity doesn't matter when it comes to the chain of command. They have robust safety valves just in case some poor soldiers get some funny ideas.
While I think this is true in most cases, when the military becomes too politicized, the hierarchy may collapse. General Geisel, former president of Brazil, has a famous quote about this.
The military echelon never gets too politicized. The high rank officers loath officer who have explicit political agendas. You can see it in every military structure including the US. The moment as a general you start taking political side and boasting about it, you get cancelled
It is true. However, the Brazilian Armed Forces have some specificities that aren't present in other places, the code of honour to protect the land under any cost(which is still prevalent, unlike superficial allegiances that exist in most Western countries' Armed Forces) ,...
history of actively participating in politics in the 20th century, including strong participation of lower rank officers. See the Tenentism movement https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenentism
