Hitchcock is very different though. His UK movies, his Hollywood movies and the later works like Frenzy are extremely different in tone, style, etc.

Actually Hitchcock is a good example of an impersonal director, soulless as Bergman once put it which I absolutely love. Herzog is just full of beautiful soul which makes me nauseous.

But so are Fitzcarraldo and Bad Lieutenant, for example, don't you think so? It's also true that the times change and same/similar methods can have very different effects. Metaphysical becomes sth cynical/pathetic... Certainly wouldn't reduce Herzog to a beautiful soul tho.

Fitzcarraldo is great but I can't believe you mentioned Bad Lieutenant on my twitter. Disrespectful really lol. Not only compared to Ferrara's version but also in itself is a shitshow even for intended farcical reasons.

But that's Herzog now, right? Or are you talking about Wenders, lol? For me Wenders was always this beautiful soul and Herzog something completely else.

And don't get me wrong, totally agree re soullessness. I just don't think it's the only viable method. And there are fascinating tensions/hybrids between soullessness and simulations of soul. Why otherwise feature Solyaris in your double-bill, which Lem absolutely despised?

I know and I didn't mean blanket impersonality. When I say soullessness, I mean it at the level of execution and methods. But that means you should have already put your soul in the service of the cause. The same thing about philosophy, ...

If it doesn't come from an unwavering psychic and personal fire, you will never do it well. But such issues should be kept in their respective contexts and not stretched out to one another.

i.e. you can still be a hopeless romantic and someone who vomits at the sight of mawkish ridicule of impersonal methods.
