There is also a Hanussen effect in Covid-19, prophecy of the doom to come through inside information.

That Szabo trilogy of Maria Brandauer is a must-watch, this, Mephisto and Col. Redl.

Remembered that Hanussen also features in Herzog's Invincible. Not WH in peak form (whatever that means), but there's a trademark Herzogian dialogue about prince-rooster in the beginning. (No wonder Deleuze loved him so much and called him the most metaphysical cinema director.)pic.twitter.com/W5A8WYbCsB

Herzog is just Herzog, which is not bad necessarily but he always bring his goddamn artistic sensibilities to the fold instead of trying to soften them by the very subject he approaches. Szabo's version is the only version you need to watch.

Great definition. But then also Hitchcock is just Hitchcock and so on. But I certainly agree that certain subjects need someone, something else.

Hitchcock is very different though. His UK movies, his Hollywood movies and the later works like Frenzy are extremely different in tone, style, etc.

Actually Hitchcock is a good example of an impersonal director, soulless as Bergman once put it which I absolutely love. Herzog is just full of beautiful soul which makes me nauseous.

My slogan when it comes to these topics: You either treat your work impersonally as if you had no soul, or you are just rewriting your autobiography.
