Calipers provide the input for, and slide rules perform analog computation. The history of computing didn't start with computers.

I'm quite familiar with how they work. I assume you are some sort of engineer who graduated when computers were scarce like my time. But they implement the very logic of digital computation.

I learned how they operate from my dad when I was six. And yes, this is still something that is embedded in the German psyche, even if now everything is done by digital computer like everywhere else. Conceptually we still inhabit a fundamentally analog world.
