The idea that there is such a thing as analogue computation is a classic oxymoron. The logic of the digital is computation and vice versa. (Now let's see how quickly this thread devolves.)

Massively multi-particle CA can be approximated macroscopically using methods akin to statistical physics: https://movablefeastmachine.org/ Generally with analog computing you have an assumed continuous system that is discretized upon read-out (steam governors, DSP, naval gun calculators)

If we can read only by discretizing, how do we know the substrate was continuous? Seems to me, the act of discerning, by definition, disqualifies notions like 'continuum'.

My god, these are not ontological theses. They are epistemic and when it come to piston means you can do introduce a lot of formal structures to account for a lot of behaviors.
