Fisher's (im)famous Vampire Castle essay was a brave but ultimately futile revolt against the left culture that was coalescing at that time, against an insular and frankly cruel form of communication. Its victory is more or less complete, even among those disposed toward Fisher.

People mind it less now, since it has become less stupid. But it is, in the final analysis, the same in content. Few are willing to follow Fisher in substantial condemnation: "Nietzsche predicted that something worse than Christianity was already on the way. Now, here it is".

Fisher's work appears like a work of romance, with its Gothic metaphors, but in the final analysis is a work of tragedy. It represents a tragic road not taken because it could not be, a plea against fate, opposing a disastrous turn that would only accelerate to this very day.

I loved that essay when Mark wrote it. He was already progressing toward such a vision in the early 2000s. What Mark didn't realize at first was how subtle the vampire castle can move around and that Nietzsche, French philosophy or British marxism were not adequate answers.

I thought it was a pompous dressing up of basically the role that Jordan Peterson would come to play, ie hysterical and knee-jerk 'you can't make me say your pronouns' reaction dressed up in pious pseudo-critical garb. Its basically just a defense of privilege.

No, I really don't think so. Mark's thesis was more sinister without losing the sight of a socialist revolution. What if the privileged mimic the under-privileged? Comparing him with Peterson or these run-of-the-mill critics of political correctness is a disservice to Mark.

He essentially began to take the marxian material conditions seriously and think about various forms of subsumption.
