Marcus Aurelius's case was rather peculiar. He acted against the slogan of stoics that you can't assume absolute power and still be a stoic, at best you can be a gadfly for the emperor.

I wouldn't say it only comes from the reactionary masculinity, I'm genuinely perplexed as some of my anti-reactionary students didn't like them one bit, some under the rubric that it's just folk-psychology and some for other reasons.
