Proust was an emotional exhibitionist par excellence. Just imagine he is your roommate and you have to listen to his nagging voice about his shitty problems all day because he has also insomnia. That's the definition of hell.

lol. that goes for at least 70% of novelists i suspect. you must get educated in the art of nagging my friend. it can be a divine form of art. Beckett knew that to full extents.

you put machos down, but then you go out of your way to make a very Hemingway-ish comment on Marcel. for shame sir, for shame. ;)

No I think of Hemmingway as a macho. Feminine prose cannot be faked by some virgin French writer. The majority of modern female writers hate that sort of knock-off feminine prose.

One more from Candace Bushnell: I’m too old to be embarrassed by books I haven’t read, people I haven’t slept with and parties I haven’t gone to. However, the one writer I’ve never been able to tolerate is Proust.

Anatole France once said 'Life is too short, and Proust is too long.' I think the accurate translation of Proust magnum opus is In search of time wasted

Oooh, that makes some good sense. that's why i'm so behind on all other things that matter in the world. (Btw, as a philosopher how much hate you should have for Proust to quote anatole france

Are you kidding me? Anatole France was one of the greatest satirists of the promethean creed, Anti-church, anti-organized religion, anti-fascist and socialist to the core.
