Huh. I was watching 'the terror' the whole time through it (Which btw is great.)

It's like the slow unfolding of a concatenated misfortune: first getting stuck in ice for the whole winter, then lead poisoning, then the goddamn Tuunbaq, burning food supply and people, rebellion, cannibalism, more lead poisoning and more Tuunbaq.

ah, geez, you spoiler. i stopped reading mid-way through your tweet. but yes, pace is one of its literary qualities that makes it an enjoyable watch unlike numerous other wanna-be-horrors series out there.

I think it's very decent adaptation of the book. Have you watched Fortitude yet? Also read Dan Simmons, The song of Kali which has similar qualities, perhaps even darker.

The only thing that surpasses the Terror in capturing the horrors of a failed expedition into the cold is The Flight of the Eagle. It was actually broadcasted from Iranian TV in the 80s. The sub version was available on YouTube but I can't find it anymore.

Yes, I don't like Vollmann one bit, I'm sure he could be Marty's best pal if he was living in the 1950s.

how come, you really think he's Heideggerian? that's an interesting take. i like the rifles a lot tho. one of the best failed-expeditions i read. also his first novel, you bright and risen angels i think is a good read, albeit a tad immature.

He is by all means a cynical pomo neo-luddite, tech-hater, macho-booster, anti-civ brat.

imo luddites can be saved. but he's not a tech-hater by no means. and he's more of a femm-boy (echoing Duchamp) by macho if you mean the awful book he wrote about prostitute, i agree. it's quite unreadable.

He only uses the trope of tech to show how evil it is, the man for drujsake is a fan of Unabomber. I remember there was an article on him in Columbia literary journal comparing him with a macho white boy going to the Middle East and loses his innocence, becomes a complete whiner.

re Unabomber: he's a sucker for pseudo-radicals, yes. what i meant by "immature" in his first novel was exactly that. but i think in rainbow series he's quite anti-white and a deliberate "traitor". anyway, i agree, he has that qualities about him, WASP, or somesuch.

generally one can say all that 2nd wave PoMos had come out of the WASP class.
