How on earth these little Islamist bobos got a foothold there? Pakistan and Saudi Arabia supported them initially but that's past, they should have gone by now.

it's not just about foreign support (in which case, don't forget the I.R's cunning game in afghanistan). unfortunately they're not completely without popular backup in certain regions. extreme corruption and hellish patriarchal oppression make a very fertile land for them.

The death of Ahmad Shah Massoud was a massive blow to a united front. I really don't think Taliban by itself could pull this off, they were advised by foreign powers to target the the achilles hill of a united Afghanistan.

of course. the saddest part is that the only sane voices in Afghanistan are all from young women. the traditional strata in the socius want them dead and forgotten. it's a very unbearable situation. i mean this region as a whole is going rapidly down and down.

You see Afghanistan is a proud country, but I think Marx and Engels misread the whole thing. As long as you have a mixture of tribalism and patriarchy you are doomed.

couldn't agree more. and we have plenty of those in the region. i think the only way out for middle-east is through women, and i don't mean it as a romantic feminist statement. it is the only objective way of killing the negative feed-back loop of ME's necropolitics.

Yes, but this is not going to happen. Patriarchy is too strong. They will go for extreme nationalism instead.

From the military perspective, British Invasion was successful in Iran because the Iranian nomads had a certain sedentary mentality or sense of being among a larger nation. This lead to their poor performance but ultimately it is a positive factor when it comes to save a nation.

depends on what you mean by "saving" i guess. but i get your drift. i think in the last 5 centuries (from safavid era on) there is some very apparent historical movement towards a point-blank of death. (cyclon touches this in a brief manner). Iran is a strange case really.
