What are you talking about? Both Cyrus and Alexander were completely opposite to the paradigms of the old world. Assyrians used to blot out civilizations out of historical memory, these two, however, began to preserve nations even though under an imperial state.

I concede to being hasty regarding Cyrus, but Alexander razing a bunch of cities over dubious reasoning and ensuring a fair degree of annihilation of the invaded population before assimilation took place is a significantly different paradigm from today.

Alexander learned the valuable lesson that no, genocide doesn't have to be absolute (perhaps out of the enthrallment he had with the cultures he invaded himself) - but older civilizations don't have much to do when comparing these greater examples with contemporary instances.
