Shuttling back and forth between Facebook and Twitter must be the key to mental health. You keep two terrible demons well-fed.

That's why I have Facebook and twitter accounts. I just want demon whiplash. I love to say embarrassing things and regret them the next morning, get hostile comments and respond to them. It truly makes me feel alive. Screw all those who think the Internet is a hell on earth.

We shouldn't dismiss the social media or the internet, saying how about going to a garden, turning off the computer? These are just nostalgic idiocies. Internet is as real as the world we live in. People who haven't made a causal connection between the two should not be trusted.

Right but we don't know what we are short-circuting online. I like Ramachandran's example that a cuckoo finds two lines on a stick more arousing than the two dots on their mother's beak. The internet is full of equivalent supernormal stimuli.

The more I thought about the example you cited the more I realized this is a very Goodmanian example. Except Nelson Goodman would have just called them two world-versions or two world-visions. Both actual and neither of them has an ultimate claim to reality.

True but one is ultimately more nourishing. It's eating a fruit vs. chugging Innocent Smoothies. One entails greater alienation.

Yes, there are better world versions, but that should not be understood in terms of their claims to reality, but in terms of their internal consistency, enabling factors, etc. It's very much like comparing geocentric and heliocentric frames. The latter is better, BUT

There are legitimate questions you can ask in the former that you can't ask in the latter, and vice versa. Like how long does it take for earth or the sun revolve around one another.

I also there are some socio-cultural factors involved here. For me the internet was the most positive alienating force. It helped me to get out of the pit of hell, like a generation spaceship that finally got me out of Iran so I can do what I do best.
