That's why I have Facebook and twitter accounts. I just want demon whiplash. I love to say embarrassing things and regret them the next morning, get hostile comments and respond to them. It truly makes me feel alive. Screw all those who think the Internet is a hell on earth.

The Internet as a public forum is a raging shitfest that no one should ever take too seriously, and I honestly wouldn't have it any other way.

But then it's very much like the actual real life world. What is the factor or factors which sets these two apart at this point?

Are you really asking? Lots of HCI stuff about this - I'm surprised you're saying this. There are lots of things in physical social interaction that you don't get when you strip down to affordances that get certain conscious reactions.

No, I disagree. We have been fooling ourselves about the distinction between these two worlds. But if one takes one of these worlds seriously, the said person most likely take the other world very seriously too. This is essentially a thesis about worlds and realism.

Classic HCI study - nurses used to take notes with pen and paper then transferred to tablet. Realized that they'd been using the pen strokes to express all kinds of meaning. You could artificially create this with emojis etc but a) marxist stuff b) it's not embodied the same

While I agree that the concrete physical differences between the various ways we communicate shouldn't be neglected, a hard division between irl and url (or simply treating one as more or less legitimate than the other) still feels mistaken.

There is no need for a hard line, just an appreciation of the limitations of current design I think

I think the current design-problem / constrain is necessary. It get us to what I just mentioned earlier re Goodman's worldmaking / world-versions. Think of symphonies which differ in tones, lines which are generated by different geometric systems, or different frames of reference

I like that image and see what you're saying. But I also like Freud's famous quote "If his lips are silent, he chatters with his fingertips; betrayal oozes out of him at every pore." I know you disagree with Ray B about this, but I think we need design that can better betray us.
