My most favorite Sid Meier's game is Civ5. It's populated by two-faced leaders, city-state grabbers, psychopaths, etc. It is the only game that I still play routinely. Move to the Deity level and all of a sudden every upstart nation tries to have a bite of your land.

Story's also why I'd choose SMAC. I enjoy Civ5 overall but dislike the limited strategy (eg keeping to 5 cities is always optimal). Generally prefer grand strategy games like Europa Universalis to the Civ series now—might be worth checking them out if you haven't already.

But Civ5 on high difficulty is real fun. Hi, I'm George Washington, I endorse liberty and how about I settle a few cities right next your capital just because I've heard you have some serious pineapple resources?

These games make a fascist out of you. When I play Civ5, I go for Persia. What is the best way to be a fascist who has a chance both at domination and cultural victories? Persia. Dem politics can give you all the fascist boosts and still you you have a chance to be a diplomat.
